Fashion In A Padded Sell

Posted by Tips Guides in Clothing

I’m not sure I should admit this, but ordinairily I hate fashion shows. Far from the air of sophisticated cool they like to project, they are usually scenes of disorganised chaos. Nothing can make a half naked model seem less sexy than seeing her get screamed at by a pompous fashion designer for not doing up some buttons in the right order!

In fact the Italians has a great word for scenes like this ‘casino’. Literally translated it means ‘brothel’ but generally its used whenever one is in a situation that seems to prove that there is no order to the universe. A bus breaks down, everyone spills out on to the pavement and starts yelling at each other for no apparent reason. That’s ‘casino’ is action. Frankly, in the context of fashion shows, either literal or empirical translations will suffice perfectly well.

It is against this background that earlier in the year, I found myself at Alexander McQueen’s menswear show. The star turn involved suits encased in clear plastic, set to strains of Neil Diamond’s “Play Me”. They reminded me of those protective coverings that American pensioners put on their sofas. Try as I might, I couldn’t really see that there is an especially big market for men with a burning desire to look like a mad pensioner’s sofa. So instead, I decided that the show must clearly be about creating a spectacle rather than clothes that translate to real life.

So engrossed in the plastic was I, that I neglected to notice the suit’s shoulders. They were were the kind of shoulders that far worthier fashion journalists than I would describe using phrases such as “defiant tailoring”. I have no idea what that means either. Instead, lets just say that it means the return of shoulder pads.

I think the 1980’s were a bit rubbish. Music was rubbish, haircuts were rubbish, people were rubbish and clothes were well, rubbish. Nothing symbolises that rubbish quite like the shoulder pad. They were clothes for a shouty, strident era. Clothes for Thatcherism. They literally discouraged uncertainty. Lets face it, if you shrugged whilst wearing a particularly large pair of shoulder pads then you started to take on the appearance of Louis XVI after his little tete a tete with Madame Guillotine.

Shoulder pads speak of braying yuppies and the sort of blazer that Rick Astley wore while yodeling about 10 goods reasons to stay, as if even he had realised that the minute people clapped eyes on him they’d be running for the exits.

Shoulder pads also remind me of a sports coat I was bought in my teens, for “special occasions”. These usually involved a psychologically wounding trip to a musical in London’s West End. I once witnessed a musical version of Mutiny On The Bounty starring Sinitta and David Essex. I thought I might at least get to witness a few sword fights and even some cleavage. I did, but it belonged to David. And you wonder how I ended up in fashion!

I got the invitation to try on the McQueen jacket and after a couple of large gin and tonics, I felt sufficiently bolstered to give it a whirl. It actually looked pretty great, even if I do say so myself. At the risk of talking about defiant tailoring, it makes your silhouette strong and defined, encourages that V taper. But it costs over a thousand pounds (two thousand dollars).

Never mind though, by the time you are reading this, Topshop and the other high street multiples will almost certainly have one on their racks. Ready to wear for a special occasion no doubt.

Why Wear A Christian T-Shirt Or Christian Cap?

Posted by Tips Guides in Clothing

You stroll down the street, go to malls, parks and even churches, you will observe adults and teenagers wearing Bible verses on their t-shirt. You will also seeing some pretty catchy catchphrases on their shirts with allusions to Bible verses. You might even see some tshirts with hateful sayings on their shirts. Why do people wear these?

It is a way to articulate who you are and what you consider to be true. This is multiplying the Gospel one t-shirt at a time. They come in t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, beanies, and baseball caps. You will find them in regular sizes to plus-sizes. Women wear them as well as little children. The color assortment is from to brilliant reds to deep black. Even the colors symbolize something about that person and their faith.

What initiated as a way for a few folks to communicate their faith gently has grown into a multi-million dollar a year industry. The need to have more distinctive designs has risen and thus an industry is born. Graphic artist are creating new designs daily. They are either being hot pressed onto the shirts or embroidered.

Cowboy and even Bikers had gotten into wearing Christian T-Shirts. I am not a cowboy but have seen some pretty cool Christian Cowboy tees. The bikers are not to be out done. Their Christian Motorcycle tees are pretty cool and their slogans are pretty unabashed. I guess they are ready to back up what they say. Hopefully with a Christian spirit.

It seems man has always tried to put across himself with the wearing of clothes. Wearing tshirts is part of the world culture. You can visit remote parts of the world and find people wearing tshirts. Tshirts are just relaxed, easy to wear and care for. They are truly a well-designed shirt. It is only natural that Christians would want to express themselves with Christian T-Shirts and Caps that spread the Gospel. I vote for them but wished some of my brothers and sisters would opt out of the intolerable saying. That is another subject for another time.

The styles today comprise of sweatshirts with hoods. They are also identified as hoodies. There are Christian sweatshirts for this style. The young folks really seem to like these. Obviously they come in black which is their favorite color of the day. It seems awful hot to see someone walking around in a dark sweatshirt with a hood over their head. I guess that is why the young folks wear them and not the older mature crowd.

Regrettably, our nation is becoming obese and therefore cloth sizes have enlarged. You can find Christian T-Shirts and Sweatshirts in plus sizes for men and women. You will usually have to pay a few dollars more for the plus size. I guess it has to do with using more material. A word of concern, just because it comes in 2XL doesn’t mean it really is big. I haven’t figured out how the makers decide what a 2XL is from a 3XL. Also, taken into consideration they may or in all probability will shrink after you wash them the first time. You don’t want to pay out $25 for a T-Shirt to clean it and now can’t wear it because it is too undersized.

Christian caps and beanies are another way that young people and adults demonstrate their faith. The beanies have recently become very popular. You also will see Christian motorcyclist wearing their beanies. I like the beanies but they just don’t look good on me. I guess you have to have the right profile of head to be styling.

Christian jewelry has been around for a long time. It is still accepted today. The cross seems to be the most popular to wear. You even see none Christians wearing the cross. I can’t help but think of being drawn near the cross.

So the next time you decide to put on a t-shirt or a beanie, think about giving out your faith. How many times have you said, I just have a hard time informing a stranger about my faith. The Christian TShirt or Cap can help open the door for you. Just don’t start off with one of those tshirts that is so repugnant or you have to be a theologian to understand what it is being said.

Jerry Johnson is trying to spread the Gospel one tshirt at a time. Visit Christian TShirts And Caps for a wide selection of Christian T-Shirts in regular and plus sizes.

Wedding Dress Styles: The Complete Guide

Posted by Tips Guides in Clothing

When shopping for your wedding dress, you should first consider which gown style you prefer. When selecting your wedding gown style, consider the silhouette, sleeves, neckline, bodice and train. Following is guide to the basic terminology of popular wedding gown styles.

The Silhouette

* A-line - The A-line or princess dress has no marked waist and the vertical seams flow from the shoulders down to a flared skirt, creating a “A” shape.
* Ball Gowns - These gowns normally quite formal, reminding you of Cinderella. The bodice is fitted with a very full skirt.
* Empire - Empire gowns have a raised waistline that starts right under the bust, flowing to a slim (but not body-hugging) skirt.
* Mermaid - As the name indicates, the mermaid dress is contoured against the body then the gown flows out beginning around the knees. This is the sexiest of the styles.
* Sheath - The sheath or column dress has a slim shape that follows close to the line of the body. The straight design is form-fitting and doesn’t allow for many body flaws.

The Sleeves

* 3/4 sleeves - end between the elbow and wrist.
* Bell - long sleeves, flare out toward the wrist creating a bell shape.
* Cap - rounded sleeves, just covering shoulders.
* Fitted point - long, fitted sleeves that come to a point over the hand.
* Juliet - long, fitted sleeves with puffy shoulders.
* Long sleeves - long sleeves that are normally form-fitting.
* Off-the-shoulder Sleeves - cover the upper part of the arm but leave the tops of shoulders exposed.
* Poet - long sleeves, fitted to the elbow then flared.
* Pouf - short sleeves, gathered to create a poufy look.
* Short sleeves - about the length of T-shirt sleeves.
* Sleeveless - strapless with no sleeves.
* Spaghetti straps - thin spaghetti straps with no sleeves.

The Neckline

* Bateau - close to straight across from the tip of the shoulder. Gives plenty of coverage.
* Halter - wraps around the back of the neck to create deep armholes. Often also a backless style, which is very sexy.
* High - covers most of the neck. Creates a formal, somewhat stiff look.
* Jewel - similar to that of a T-shirt. Creates a bustier look.
* Off-The-Shoulder - as the name indicates, the top of the shoulders are bare. Showcases your collarbone and shoulders.
* Portrait - a very wide scoop from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other.
* Scoop - classic U-shaped neckline. Can be cut low for a more sexy look.
* Square - squared neckline, often associated with empire gowns.
* Strapless - normally straight across. Not recommended for women with small busts.
* Sweetheart - shaped like the top half of a heart. Emphasizes the cleavage.
* V-Neck - dips in the front into a V-shape. Can be very deep.

The Bodice
The bodice refers to the portion of the dress between the neckline and skirt.

* Corset - a form fitting bodice with boning and lace-up closures.
* Halter - sleeveless bodice that wraps around you neck, normally backless.
* Midriff - fits very closely around the mid-section, accentuating your waist.
* Surplice - sections of fabric cross wrap in the front or back.
* Tank - sleeveless with wide armholes like tank top.

The Train

* Sweep - 8″ to 12″ in length, just a few inches longer than the gown.
* Court - extends about 3 feet from the waist.
* Chapel - extends about 4 feet from the waist.
* Cathedral - extends about 6 to 9 feet from the waist.
* Royal - extends more than 9 feet from the waist.

The Veil

* Birdcage - falls right below the chin, usually attached to a headpiece.
* Flyaway - ends at the shoulder.
* Blusher - worn over your face, about 28″ long.
* Elbow Length - ends at the elbow or waist.
* Fingertip - ends at the finger tips or just below the waist.
* Ballet - ends at the ankles.

Fashion: To Do Or Not To Do, That Is The Question

Posted by Tips Guides in Clothing

Always give yourself the right to choose whatever you are most excited about.

Your closet must always have classic fashions. No matter what your personal fashion taste is, you can never go wrong with those basic items of clothing that that can be dressed up for an evening event, or dressed down for a casual look. Also, classic clothing can be accessorized for an updated look by adding current jewelry, a bold scarf, or a chic belt.

It is better to know the difference between styles that are classics and styles that are simply trends. Classic styles are those items of clothing that are traditional and have a long lasting look, like the little black dress, the tailored suit, or the slim pant suit.

When you have classic fashions, you can go anywhere at any time. Especially when you select well-made pieces in good fabrics, they tend to last longer with each wear. In addition, they tend to feel and look better when you wear them.

Look for lightweight fabrics in natural fibers like silk, wool, and wool gabardine, cotton, linen, and cashmere. Many of the quality man-made synthetic fibers are suitable for long lasting wear. Make sure everything fits, especially your tailored pieces. Though, when alterations are necessary, for a better fit, it may be worth the time and money to visit a tailor or an expert seamstress.

For those of you who are hooked on the everyday casual look, you can still dress in your own way. Try adding a tailored jacket with your jeans, or a jean jacket with a good T-shirt and tailored skirt.

Classics don’t have to be boring. Showing your creative side, why not wear an ethnic or artful scarf to give the classics your own unique style. Think about an African print tunic, a wide bracelet, or a Jade pendant.

Classics are also good for the budget conscious. Since classic clothing lasts longer, you will make fewer trips and spend less at the malls. With just that little black dress or a solid color suit, you can add a bold colored scarf, several chain necklaces, a three-quarter tunic, or different belts to create many new looks.

Here is a test…

With the wardrobe you now have in your closet, how many can be counted as classics? Do you have . . .

O At least one, three-piece suit consisting of a jacket, skirt and pants in a solid color.

O A navy blazer — it makes an impression.

O At least one white shirt — nothing beats a long sleeve, crisp cotton shirt.

O At least one pair of solid color slacks - can be paired with any top or jacket.

O Jeans — Keep them clean and pressed.

O One little black dress — All hail to this one item that can go day to evening.

O Formal wear — Can be elegant separates that can be mixed and matched to make different outfits.

O An all-weather coat. The trench coat will always be a true classic.

O A smile - pulls your whole outfit together.

O A positive self image. Confidence and pride works wonders.

As long as you know the difference between the styles for daytime casual and evening elegance, your choice of fashion will be in agreement with the appropriate occasion. Fashion style, fashion etiquette and good taste then, are the answers to the fashion question.

Gerri D Smith designs apparel for women who love dressing for elegant evenings. Why elegance? You could say that elegance is found where beauty and style intersect with imagination. For a peek at her collections - Visit, http://www.distinctiveimpressions-2.com

Jean Clothing Fashion For Teens

Posted by Tips Guides in Clothing

Being a long-legged moderately skinny myself, I also have some problems finding jeans. The brand I really like right now, that is a little pricey, are Levi Capital E. They have a great variety and lots of great boot cut styles, and Levi has this handy thing called Jean finder, You answer some simple questions such as how you like your jeans to fit, and what leg opening you want, and they find you jeans based off that. Another brand of jeans I am rather fond of are Hollister, mainly because they have jeans in long, and they are defiantly long. They also have a wide variety of flared jeans and boot cut.

I have seen inserts for the side seam to enlarge the waist. If the adjustment is not a lot, you can get some jean material from the fabric shop, make a wedge shape from the fabric, allowing for seams on all sides. You will need to remove the waistband in the area of the side seam, cut it so that you can add material in the band also. Open the side seam so you can sew the wedge into the seam. Add material to the waistband to extend it to fit.

The best way is to have a pair of jeans that you like the fit. Turn the ones you want to alter inside out. Lay the good ones on top of the ones that need changing. Draw around the good ones onto the others. This will give you lines to sew on that will alter the pants to fit like the good ones. You may have to remove the waistband to alter the size of the waist. Sandblasting is a very unique process. You can try bleaching but it definitely won’t look the same. Denim makers’ use highly sophisticated chemicals and special machines to sandblast jeans after they are sewn together. That is why most denim jeans are so costly.

Usually when jeans are dyed with the brown tint they make sure that it is washable without fading. Bleach may work but you risk ruining them all together. Bleach spots and splotchy areas. The best I can suggest is to take them to dry cleaners and see if they have a jean bleaching method. Otherwise just leave them as is.

You can use fabric paints and they are so nice to work with. When they are dry they are soft to the touch. You can also use acrylic paints they dry nicely as well. Before you paint over the stain, wash the jeans without softener. Then you iron the area free of wrinkles and paint your design. When the paint has cured for at least 24 hours, use a pressing cloth and iron the painting. This will seal the paint and protect it as well. When you wash the jeans, I would use cold water, as the hot will wear the painting out faster. You can put your jeans in the dryer and I would turn them inside out to protect the paint.

To make a mini skirt! Well first, you cut the legs off. Don’t cut them exactly where the legs meet incase you need to fix something. Cut a little lower. Then you trim off any uneven edges and make the skirt the same length all the way round. But you don’t have to sew anything back. Just pull a few loose threads and give it that “customized” look. Make sure you use those big tailor scissors or any tough scissors so you don’t make a mess. Cutting jeans is really hard.
