What Colors To Wear For Weddings At Different Times

Posted by Tips Guides in Fashion

Me and my husband going to my friends wedding and I am wearing an oriental style dress that is in a champagne/gold color. The Chinese are big into silver, jade (a semi-precious stone which is usually a light, translucent green, but does come in other colors) and turquoise (another semi=precious stone which is a vivid opaque blue and usually marbled with white and/or black veins).

Because your gown is gold I would recommend sticking with gold jeweler. If your dress is adorned with a beautiful pattern as they so often are, I’d recommend some simple earrings such as diamond studs or delicate diamond drops.

I would choose a dainty watch or bracelet (in just plain gold or with a little bit of sparkle), wearing both with an ornate dress would look too much and take away from the dress.

If the dress is plain then do go for more ornate jeweler with colored gemstones (you can get away with silver with a plain dress, its also cheaper and more readily available!). If you go to any web site and type in ‘Chinese earrings’ and then click on ‘images’ it gives you some great ideas. The round Chinese symbol drop earrings are nice and some of the chandelier styles look very pretty (although some of these are more ‘Asian’ than specifically Chinese). You can also get away with the bracelet and watch together.

Is your gent brave? If so, a pink or lilac shirt would look fab with his charcoal suit. It’s a very modern look and if he’s not wearing a tie then an open top button would look great. White will look dated and if he goes for yellow to tone with you, it’s just not going to go well with the grey. Black is a good color and certain blues, but it HAS to be the right blue so you’d need to choose carefully.

When you go shopping, take the suit jacket if you can to help you find a good match.

For a more formal style wedding then a black dress (cocktail type) is okay as long as it is an appropriate style and won’t detract from the bride. If the wedding is early in the day then I’d forego black for a soft color.

Another time that black or white is appropriate is if the bride wants a “black/white” wedding and requests guests to wear one or the other. According to my sources, for a formal day-time wedding, women should wear elegant short dresses or suits and men may wear a dark suit. Then you’ll want to change into a long evening gown and tux for the reception.

Without knowing the other colors in your wedding, it is hard to tell you exactly what would work. However, in general you should stick to lighter colors for daytime events. Red, yellow, gold, light silver and any pastel color would be appropriate. Darker colors such as black, plum, burgundy, hunter green, etc. are more appropriate for evening hours.

If you’re still set on the color black, however, you may just want to change the length of the dress. A black tea-length or cocktail-length dress would be appropriate for an afternoon ceremony.

Some Of The Basics You Need To Know About Boating Shoes

Posted by Tips Guides in Fashion

You have undoubtedly heard of boat shoes before, but do you really know what they are and where they come from? Many shoe companies often call them deck shoes or topsiders. The design of boat shoes probably originated with Native Americans. They used to wear moccasins that were made of a water-resistant form of leather, low profile, and lacing on the sides to keep them snug to the foot. In modern times, they originated as a shoe for use when boating. These shoes were made to keep you from slipping on the wet boat deck. The leather top part of the shoe was treated with oils to keep the water out and the soles were made of a non-skidding rubber. The low profile of the shoe was so that you could take it on and off easily like a slipper or loafer. This made it easier to get on and off the boat quickly.

Eventually, boat shoes became popular and fashionable to wear off the yacht deck. They found their way into fashion as a shoe to wear somewhere between formal and casual shoes. The word boat gave them a very sporty connotation and the look made them a stylish addition to any wardrobe. You will see that many people wear boat shoes without socks, and some even come with sock pads inside to make them more comfortable for bare feet. They can be worn with socks, but it is just more popular and stylish to wear them without.

So when do you wear boat shoes? Often times men find it hard to decide when it is okay to wear boat shoes and when it is okay to wear loafers. Most stylists will tell you that loafers are to be worn with the business casual outfits in your closet. You can wear them with jeans and a button down shirt for a proper look. Boat shoes, on the other hand, are more for sports looks. They should be worn with things like golf shoes, shorts, and even polo shirts. In essence, they should be worn with dressier sports wear. The only time of year it is really not okay to wear boat shoes is in the winter.

Because of their roots of originally being made for use on wet ship decks, they are very tough shoes. Even the toughest of shoes, though, need some maintenance. To keep your shoes looking good and lasting, you should regularly put oil for leather on them. The oil will help them maintain their ability to withstand the moisture that they were originally made to withstand. You should regularly remove the insoles and spray them with a shoe cleaner so that they do not grow fungus. If the sole begins to wear, make sure you have it repaired as soon as possible. This will help you prevent slips on the wet deck of the ship.

When you get ready to buy boat shoes, there are some things you should be looking for. For instance, they should have a solid sole that feels durable and that will help prevent slipping. The issue of slipping is not just for working on the deck of the ship, but also just in day to day life. They should also fit your foot well and be comfortable, but just make sure you try them on before you buy them. It is impossible to know how good a shoe will feel or fit without putting it on your foot.

Keep in mind as you shop for boat shoes that quality ones are not going to come cheaply. If you are willing to spend the money, though, they will last you for a number of seasons and even years without any significant deterioration in quality. Keep an eye out for name brand shoes to get the best quality. Keep in mind that not every company calls them boat shoes. Watch for boat shoes, topsiders, or even deck shoes.

Boat shoes are great not just for the deck of your boat. They are also a great way to get that sporty casual look. If you are going to get a new set of boat shoes, just make sure you try them on so that you find a good shoe that will take care of you and your feet.

How To Create Your Own Custom Silicon Wristband

Posted by Tips Guides in Fashion

To create a lasting impression in the minds of the people, you have to create an individualist statement. Be it a gift or the fight for a social cause, it should reflect a unique point of view to stand apart in the crowd and it is precisely this uniqueness that has made the personalized wristbands so popular across the world.

When there is no doubt regarding the efficacy of the custom wristbands for upholding your cause, people often are clueless as to how to create one. Here is a brief guide to help you get started in your efforts.

When it comes to create a custom silicon wristband, you have to consider three important points: first the color of the band; second is the selection of logo and third is the message imprinted on it.

Choose the right color
So far as the wristbands are concerned, different colors signify different causes. We all know about the famous yellow Live Strong wristbands that aim at uniting the cancer patients all over the world in their determination to overcome this deadly disease. Though it is not essential that you strictly follow these color codes to create your wristband, it is advisable to use a color scheme that correctly represents your cause or your brand.

Suppose you are going to use silicon wristbands to spread the news about your club that takes part in various kinds of marine activities. In that case, choose the aqua blue as the color of your wrist band. If you are fighting against any kind of violence, then red is the color to best represent your aims. Are you supporting some environment relates causes? Then green should be the color of your custom band.

Create a suitable logo
People tend to better respond to any kind of message when it is represented through the images or pictures. That is why logos are so important; the specific icon associated with a certain cause or product tend to cut a lasting impression on the minds of the people and as such the logos have great advertising value. So you will find starting from big corporate houses to small charitable organizations have their own logos that help stir up a person’s memory whenever he or she comes across the particular icon.

But choosing the right logo is very important: there should be a link between the logo design and the aims of your organization. Just consider our previous examples; it is odd for a sports club to use the logo of a tree, similarly it will be of no practical value, if an environmental organization uses the picture of water sports equipment as their logo.

Thus the logo in your custom bands should correctly represent your specific aims.

Slogan
The last and most important consideration relates to the choice of a winning message. The slogan should be cut and thrust to reflect your objectives in a concrete form.

Thus the success of your custom wristband depends on the three factors: the color, logo and slogan. If you are passionate about your cause, you are sure to strike the right combination to create the most attractive custom wrist band.

Beauty Pageants Through The Years

Posted by Tips Guides in Fashion

Beauty Pageants date back to 1921. This year saw the grand introductions of beauty pageants as we know today. The first pageant was held in Atlantic City, called the National Beauty Tournament. However, 1921 also saw the very first Miss America Pageant. This pageant was nothing like today’s pageant, with representatives from every state. In fact, the first Miss America Pageant only had eight contestants and was won by a 16 year old, Washington, D.C. resident named Margaret Gorman.

In 1922 and 1923, a first and last occurred in Miss America history, the same girl, Mary Campbell won the title twice, in two years. This prompted organizers to create a rule that said that any winner can only hold one title and never qualify for the title again.

The late twenties and early thirties were without Miss America Pageants, thanks to the press and the Depression. When it did come back, they included evening gowns in the competitions. Then in later years of the thirties, a talent competition was added as an optional event for the women in the beauty pageant. In 1938, it then becomes a category that was required.

In the world of beauty pageants, it was soon clear that Miss America was very popular and then the birth of Miss Universe, Miss World, Junior Miss, and Miss USA Beauty Pageants occurred in the 50’s. The 50’s also saw the first live televised Miss America Beauty Pageant

The sixties were filled with first as well, in the start of the decade, Miss USA crowned the first black woman in history, Corrine Huff. The sixties also gave birth to Little Miss Universe, Little Miss America, and Miss Teenage America pageants. What the world didn’t know then, was that in 1962 the newly crowned America’s Junior Miss, Diane Sawyer, would one day become one of the most influential journalists in the world.

Throughout the years, beauty pageants continue to be a scene of immediate success in every generation, young and old, and they seem to be the one goal that every little girl dreams of. They all dream of hearing the ever popular There She Is song, while she is being crowned one of the new pageant winners.

The Tarnished Crown

However, beauty pageants have not been with incidents, deceit, and tarnished reputations. For example, in 1937, just after being crowned, Bette Cooper decided she just wanted to go home and left, which caused an extensive search and struggle for pageant officials. In 1957, Leona Gage, Miss USA was ripped of her crown after her husbands mother disclosed that she was the mother of two children and married.

In 1973, Miss World and the first American to hold the crown, lost her crown and title, thanks to rumors floating around about numerous affairs. In 1984, Vanessa Williams, the first black woman to win the title of Miss America, resigned from her title and crown because she had posed for nude photographs in the popular adult magazine Penthouse. On about the same note in 2006, Miss Great Britain, loses her title and crown after she was found to have relations with member of the judging panel, as well as posing in nude photographs for the adult magazine Playboy.

The Miss America Beauty Pageant has had 87 winners from a variety of states, Miss USA has had 10 winners, one of which went on to win Miss Universe, and 23 Miss Teen USA winners, since the beauty pageants began. A fascinating Miss Teen USA fact is that eight states have yet to have any girls place as a finalist in the beauty pageant.

As long as women have a fascination with beauty, beauty pageants will continue to be as popular as they have always been. Married or unmarried women, teens, pre-teens, and even toddlers enter beauty pageants today, all over the world. There is always a pageant. In the south, there are schools that hold their own beauty pageants such as Little Miss Fourth District for a elementary school in Georgia, or Little Miss Tree Festival, there is no age limit in beauty pageants today.

Fashion Of The 1940s And Industry

Posted by Tips Guides in Clothing

The fashion industry is a cut-throat industry. Often aspiring designers can’t just climb their way to the top, they have to claw their way there, and most never make it. However don’t be discouraged, a handful of them do make it. I think that it would be the more career savvy decision for you to move to the United States, preferably New York City. However, the choice is yours. Montreal and Toronto are both modern, great cities that I’m sure would have plenty of opportunities. However, if you really want this, my advice would be to move to NYC. I don’t really know if successful European and American designers travel to Canada to help students, but I’m sure if you enroll in a fine design school in Canada you would have some designer guests, as most schools do.

The International Academy of Design and Technology (located in both Toronto and Montreal), the Ontario College of Art and Design, the Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology, and the Superior Fashion School of Montreal are all great schools that you might want to look into, if you haven’t already. I have no idea as to what your odds are when it comes to working with designers like Dior and Dolce and Gabbing, nobody can really determine that.

It’s all really a matter of how badly you want it, and how hard you are willing to work. I don’t really think the five best fashion jobs in Canada differ from the five best fashion jobs in any other country. Also, I don’t think anyone can determine what the five best fashion jobs are in any major country/city, as it is all just a matter of taste. Merchandising, marketing, photography, journalism….the list is endless. Fashion in Canada is nowhere near as in demand fashion is in Europe and the USA. If you want the REAL fashion industry, head to New York, Paris, or Milan.

The 1940’s was a very glamorous era in the history of fashion. The stars of the day that you would probably be interested in researching would be: Katharine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Joan Crawford, Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Lauren Bacall, and Humphrey Bogart. Each of these stars had a style all their own. Kate Hepburn, especially helped usher in a new style, in that she always wore slacks, she was hardly ever seen in gowns or skirts, this was extremely rare for that day, she was definitely ahead of her time. Women of the 1940’s emulated what they saw on the screen. For instance, women had their eyebrows either tweezed or painted on very thin and very defined.

They also wore their lipstick in what was called a “cupid’s bow” which was where the upper lip was accentuated rather than the fuller, bottom lip.

The hair was worn in a loose “finger wave.” If you really want to see a true lady of the 1940’s, I suggest you rent the movie “Chinatown,” Faye Dunaway’s character Evelyn really captures a woman of the 1940’s.

Back to clothing, silk stockings were a wardrobe staple for any 1940’s woman. However, the United States was rationing silk, being in the midst of World War II. So the only silk stockings woman could get their hands on had a very noticeable line down the back of them. In order to hide this, women would take a permanent marker and draw down the back of their legs in order to hide the large run in their stockings.

The basic silhouette for women from the 40’s was broad shoulders, a small corseted waist and full hips. Fabrics were very light as many new synthetics were being introduced. Also, while Hollywood glamour was very ‘in’, the US was at war at the time, rationing was in effect and many women were not able to afford things like pantyhose and stockings. One thing women did at the time was draw a line of the back of the leg to make it look like they were wearing stockings, even if they weren’t. (silk stockings had seams). Shoes had a heel and a slight platform. Round toes, peep toes and ankle straps were common. If you’re looking for famous 40’s women to model your look after I’d look for images of Veronica Lake, Rita Hayworth or Ingrid Bergman. All had the classic ’40’s’ look.

One of the most effective ways of communicating 40’s fashion is through hair and make-up. Hair was worn long, smooth with intricate finger waves. Make-up was striking and simple. A dramatically arched brow, liquid black liner (ONLY on the upper lid) and bright classic red lipstick. But very matte, no gloss ever. You mentioned the New Look, but that style didn’t debut until the late 40’s and didn’t become more popular until the 50’s. With the new look shoulder silhouettes became more ’soft’, the waist was worn more tightly corseted and hips became even fuller.

What Clothes Are Good To Wear To Work And What Is Just For Fun

Posted by Tips Guides in Clothing

First off, you have forgotten everything you knew about fashion. And you said, the tight clothes will no longer do it. You’re going to want clothes that lay against the body, rather than clothes that look like they were painted on.

There are some simple basics that will take you far. A nice pair of black dress pants is great–you can wear them to work, or you can wear them out. Express has a lot, and they are very flattering on everyone. Get a tan pair to wear with brown. Some of the stores will carry the kind of cloths that you are looking for it is the question of what kind of running around are you willing to do to have cloths that you want.

Look for the “Christie fit” because it has a bit of a younger look (so you won’t look matronly). A black or grey pencil skirt is good to have too (again works for going out or work). Express has these, and you can actually find some nice ones at cheaper places. A crisp white button-up shirt is a MUST HAVE because it will ALWAYS be popular and look good. You can actually find some nice ones at most any store that you go to and again this will consist of you having to drive to many different stores so you can find the right one that matches you.

You’ll also need a good pair of dressy jeans. My favorite brand is paper denim and cloth…they are ridiculously expensive, so I don’t buy them in stores. Auction web stores are a lifesaver for stuff like this. Go to a store that has this brand (chip and pepper is good too). Try on a bunch to find your size. Then go onto a web store and search for the jeans you found. They usually have brand new jeans with the tags still on for less than half price. I don’t know how they do it. But it is so worth it.

Well, you’ll want more plain colored shirts now. H&M has great fitted long sleeve ones. Rich colors are in right now like plum and dark green. In addition to this, invest in a couple nice accessories–like a big structured bag or some chunky silver jewelry. They add a lot to an outfit.

The dress sounds great and you can wear it with either hose and pumps or tights and boots. Either way will look fabulous. If it were me I’d probably do the hose and pumps for the company dinner because that’s the more conservative look, and wear the knee high boots for a dinner out with friends. Again, could go the other way too and still be perfectly proper! Enjoy the dress…it’s so practical and at your height and weight, you probably look amazing in it!! I always recommend women have at least one of those in their wardrobe!

I am a huge fan of your idea of dark wash jeans and the sweater–personally I’d go with red or another bright color. The ankle boots sound cute. It’s probably getting a little chilly for open-toed shoes anyway (I just live on the dangerous side). Any type of heels and jeans just looks so classy in my opinion. The cropped jacket sounds cute, as does the velvet pea coat. The jacket says “I’m such a fun gal!” and the peacoat says “I’m fun but much to classy!” so it is up to you. Both choices sound great.
