When it comes to acne, many people think that only teenagers suffer from this type of skin problem. The truth is, however, that adults also deal with acne every day. Although it often seems to be the case, nobody has perfect skin. Even if someone’s complexion appears flawless, you can rest assured that they either know a few makeup tricks or use effective acne treatments to keep their skin healthy. Because cosmetics are often associated with causing acne, covering up your problem areas may be doing more harm than good. Although the exact cause of acne is not known, there are a number of factors that are widely believed to contribute to its occurrence. Among them, family genes, hormones and stress. Just as there are a number of causes for acne, there are different acne products designed to treat and minimize breakouts. In addition to prescription-only medication, there are a number of dermatologist tested acne products that are available as over-the-counter purchases. While there is currently no absolute cure for acne, there are many acne treatments available to help your skin regain a healthy and vibrant appearance.

Whether you receive a prescription for acne products or purchase them over the counter, always be sure to research the product and its active ingredients. How fast is the product supposed to work? Are there any potential side effects and, if so, what are they? When you become more informed of a product and it’s capabilities, you will be able to make an informed decision as to which acne treatments will be most effective for you.

Does Natural Really Mean Natural When It Comes To Skin Care Products?

With organic and natural products quickly gaining in popularity, attention has gone into the chemicals that are found in our everyday skin care products.

Whilst we may never really think of it, there are loads of chemicals dumped into our products which we automatically think are good for us. However, as time goes on we are realizing too often than not, that a lot of chemicals within our products are not as innocent as they first appeared to be. Not only that, but these so called natural products on the market are not always what they appear to be either.

So how exactly do we know which products to go for and which ones could be potentially harmful? The main way to tell if you are being conned, or if you are really buying something natural is to read the labels on the back of the products!

The Ingredients to Avoid in Natural Products

Sadly some natural products do still contain some chemicals which may be harmful to our health. Most of us do not know what to look out for so the companies generally get away with it. After all if we are buying natural products they have to be good for us do they not? The answer is no, not always.

Imidazolidinyl Urea

Many people believe that Urea is good for them as it is sometimes found in emollients which help to provide moisture for dry skin. However, Imidazolidinyl Urea is definitely not good for you. It is found in most skin care products, yet it has often been found to create skin reactions such as contact dermatitis. So if you do notice this chemical in your natural skin care products, do not buy it!

Fragrance

Whilst this may seem harmless enough, fragrance can often contain many ingredients which are often not separately listed. So if you cannot see the ingredients listed separately, how can you tell that the chemicals are not harmful? It is always better to look for products which state natural fragrance or the fragrance of essential oils.

Paraffin

Paraffin is another popular ingredient used in many skin care products. It is often used by manicurists who melt it and dip the hands into it. It is mainly used in eyebrow pencils, hair remover and cold creams, though it is also found in many other cosmetics. It comes from either coal or petroleum.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is a detergent which often has a drying effect on the skin. This can cause irritation so it is best avoided.

Formaldehyde

This is a preservative and it is mainly found in nail care products but it is also contained in other cosmetics too. It has been known to cause adverse skin reactions.

Methyl Paraben

This one is extremely common and is widely used. It tends to often cause skin irritation.

Overall there are a lot of chemicals and potentially harmful ingredients listed in so called natural products; you just have to know which ones to look out for. If you do spot the ingredients above listed in your favorite cosmetics, opt for a better alternative. There are gentler alternatives for the skin including:

Potassium Sorbate
Retinyl
Sorbic Acid
Ascorbic Acid

All chemicals tend to be bad for the skin so it is always better to try and avoid them. It really is shocking what goes into our skin care products and most people do not realize that their products can harm them. However, prolonged use of skin care products which contain potentially harmful ingredients can cause potential health problems as the ingredients soak into the skin and they can enter the bloodstream. It is always better to read the labels and know what is in your favorite products. That way, you can make a consciences decision whether or not you want to risk using the product. After all, knowledge is power!

How To Prevent Adult Acne Destroying Your Life

Acne is usually thought to be a problem mainly affecting teenagers, but this trend is changing. Adult acne is a condition that is on the rise. Some have suggested the rise in this malady has been caused by such modern-day circumstances as air pollution and junk food. Whatever the cause, adult acne can cause untold grief and discouragement for those who are afflicted with it.

Improving your diet is one of the first lines of defense you can take if you are trying to keep acne from destroying your adult life. We seem to grow immune to dietary advice the more we hear it. We all know we should watch fats and sugars, and eat more fresh vegetables and fruits. Yet we have a hard time implementing these changes. Do it for your face next time!

One superfood you should add to your diet is flaxseed meal. This good tasting addition to soups and salads contains a wide range of healthy nutrients including essential fatty acids and lignans. Lignans are phytoestrogens that help stabilize women’s hormones. Since adult acne is more prevalent in women, and since it can be aggravated by hormonal fluctuations, the lignans can help. The essential fatty acids work as anti-inflammatory agents.

Current topical treatments for adult acne include benzoyl peroxide and acid peels. Mild cases can be treated with over the counter products, while severe cases may need prescription medications containing these ingredients. Benzoyl peroxide works by killing the bacteria that cause acne. The acid peels can be uncomfortable, but they remove the outer layer of skin so that other medications can get deep into the pores.

Sometimes a dermatologist will prescribe a course of antibiotics to fight inflamed acne. It’s always a good idea to take acidophilus or eat yogurt when you have to take antibiotics, because the medication will kill the favorable bacteria in your digestive tract as well as the unfavorable ones that are causing the acne.

You should wash your face no more than twice a day. Use a gentle cleanser and a gentle touch. Don’t scrub it with rough textured pads or cloths like you may have done when you were a teenager. Your skin is much drier and more delicate now. Do be sure to remove your make-up at night, and cleanse your face of perspiration after you work out.

The sun can actually make acne worse, although many people seem to think getting a tan helps. A steam facial, on the other hand, with or without herbs added, can help the pores to open. Many skin-friendly herbs can be made into a healing tea that can be used for gently cleansing the skin. Some good herbs for the skin include great burdock root, yarrow, marshmallow, and calendula.

Tea tree oil is healing for skin ailments, but can be harsh. Try to find a product that contains less than 35 percent tea tree oil to get the healing benefit without the harshness. Vitamin E oil is another healing ingredient to look for.

In addition to eating right and using safe, effective skincare products, it’s always smart to keep an upbeat, confident attitude. Whatever physical ailment a person has to contend with, discouragement can only make it worse.
